How to be more clinical in front of goal.

A football player in action during a match

Every player remembers the chance they missed. Being clinical in front of goal is not about luck. It comes from good technique, calm decisions and a lot of practice. Here are six finishing tips we use to help players score more often.

1. Accuracy before power

Many young players try to hit the ball as hard as they can. But a well-placed shot into the corner beats a powerful shot straight at the goalkeeper. Aim low and towards the corners, and only add power once the placement is consistent.

2. Get your body over the ball

Shots that fly over the bar usually come from leaning back. Keep your head and chest over the ball as you strike it, plant your standing foot beside the ball and point it at the target. Strike through the middle or upper half of the ball with your laces to keep the shot down.

3. Use the side foot when you're close

Inside the box, the goal is often to pass the ball into the net. The inside of the foot gives far more accuracy than the laces. Many goals are scored with a calm side-foot finish rather than a big strike.

4. Decide early

Hesitation kills chances. Before the ball arrives, glance at the goalkeeper and the goal, and decide where you will shoot. Players who decide early have more time and look more composed, because they are not making the decision under pressure.

5. Practise with both feet

Chances do not always fall on your stronger foot. Players who can finish with both feet score more, because they can shoot immediately instead of taking an extra touch that gives the defender time to close them down.

6. Repetition builds composure

Composure comes from confidence, and confidence comes from having done it hundreds of times before. The more quality shots a player takes in training, the calmer they feel when the real chance arrives.

A simple finishing drill

  • Place a ball around the penalty spot.
  • Take one touch to the side, then shoot into the bottom corner.
  • Alternate the touch left and right, and finish with the opposite foot.
  • Do 10 on each side, and count how many hit the target.

Track the score each week. Improvement you can see is a great motivator.
