A simple football warm-up for kids.

A good warm-up prepares the body and mind for football. It raises the heart rate, loosens the muscles and gets players touching the ball before the real action starts. For young players, the best warm-ups are simple, active and fun.
Why warm up?
Warming up helps players move better from the first minute, sharpens their touch and gets them focused. It is also a great habit to build early, because players who learn to warm up properly as juniors keep doing it as they get older.
The routine (around 10 to 15 minutes)
1. Light movement with the ball
Dribble gently around a space, using both feet and lots of small touches. Change direction often. This gets the body moving and the feet working.
2. Dynamic movements
- Jogging with high knees.
- Heel flicks.
- Side shuffles in both directions.
- Gentle leg swings, forwards and sideways.
3. Ball mastery
Two to three minutes of toe taps, inside taps and sole rolls sharpens the touch. See our ball mastery routine for more ideas.
4. Passing in pairs
Short passes with a partner, using both feet. Gradually increase the distance and the pace of the passes.
5. Short sprints
Finish with a few short, sharp sprints over five to ten metres, building up to near full pace. This prepares players for the quick bursts football demands.
Tips for coaches and parents
- Keep it active. Long lines and standing around defeat the purpose.
- Get the ball involved early. Every touch counts.
- Keep it positive and fun so players arrive at the main session ready to go.
