How to prepare for football trials.

Trials are a big moment for many young players. In a short time, players need to show coaches what they can do, often in an unfamiliar environment. Good preparation makes a huge difference, both to performance and to how a player feels on the day.
What trial coaches look for
Trial coaches rarely expect perfection. They tend to look for players who:
- Do the basics well: a clean first touch, accurate passing and good decisions.
- Work hard without the ball and keep going after mistakes.
- Communicate with teammates and show a positive attitude.
- Understand their position and what the team needs from them.
A simple pass played well often impresses more than a flashy skill that loses the ball.
In the weeks before
The best preparation starts well before the trial. Regular practice on first touch, passing and finishing builds sharpness. Game-like practice helps players make quicker decisions. Fitness matters too, because players who can keep working hard throughout a trial stand out.
The day before
- Pack boots, shin guards, water and any gear needed for the conditions.
- Check the time, location and how to get there.
- Eat well, stay hydrated and get a good night's sleep.
On the day
Arrive early so there is time to settle in and warm up properly. During the trial, focus on doing the simple things well. Call for the ball, help teammates and keep a positive body language, especially after mistakes. Coaches notice how players react when things go wrong.
Handling nerves
Nerves are normal. Every player feels them, including professionals. Simple routines like a familiar warm-up, deep breaths and focusing on the first few simple actions help players settle. Remind yourself of the work you have done to prepare.
Whatever the result
Trials are one step in a long journey. If the result is not what you hoped for, ask for feedback, keep working and go again. Growth takes time. Many successful players faced setbacks along the way.
